In 1920, after the Russian SFSR became a part of the Soviet Union, Kazan became the capital of the Tatar ASSR. In 1377 King Louis I of Hungary authorized the Transylvanian Saxons of the Brasov region to build a castle as a bulwark against northward expansion of the Ottoman Empire.The castle was completed by 1388 it also served as a customs house for Transylvania, then a voievodate province of Hungary.
